We know we have a problem with how we fund our infrastructure and transportation needs. Our federal Highway Fund is close to being out of money and the State Legislature can’t seem to keep their sticky fingers off the amount we do send to Sacramento. A new idea, SB 1077 (DeSaulnier), is to tax Californians for every vehicle mile they drive. Senator DeSaulnier wants the Department of Motor Vehicles to put together a pilot project that will assess issues relating to implementing a vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) “fee” and report back to the Legislature no later then June 30, 2016. OCTax is opposed to SB 1077, especially given the fact that this is a tax trying to be disguised as a fee.
